So, Monday is Memorial Day. That means three things:
- We get a three-day weekend (woohoo!)
- We will be going to a barbecue
- We really need to figure out what we’re bringing
The good thing about Memorial Day is that it involved a lot of flags so I can tap into my Fourth of July inspiration board. Oh yeah, I have one. No point in trying to make you believe otherwise. I guess that probably isn’t too surprising since I told you I want to go to Fleet Week with Joe.
Anyway, last year, for the Fourth of July, I brought some yummy strawberries to a barbecue. They were simple enough to do, although I would maybe do them the night before this time around, and were a big hit so it’s definitely something I could do again. There’s really nothing better than having fruit on a warm day (and it is going to be warm on Monday, my friends).

Sticking along with the fruit theme, I could always make a flag out of fruit (found on Pinterest but originally from Chandler & Brianne’s Blog). Who doesn’t love a strawberry/banana combo? I’m not so sure about blueberries – I only trust them in my smoothies. This is super patriotic and reminds me of the cakes my aunts used to make for the 4th (just a vanilla cake with blueberries and strawberries on top) so I’m a fan.
If we want to be really lazy (which could definitely be a good thing after Joe’s week of paper-writing), we could always grab a gallon of Uncle Louie G’s Red, White, and Blue. It just so happens to be my favorite so I am totally on board with this plan.
Now, let’s say I was real ambitious about this and wanted to make something awesome. Something that would just knock everyone out of their socks. Maybe I could make this…
… oh yeah, that would gather some attention (found on Pinterest, originally from Glorious Treats. Update: According to Ainhoa, the flag cake was first made by Elissa over at 17 and Baking). I’m not entirely sure that I’m capable of doing this yet (maybe for the Fourth of July?) but it’s definitely on my to-do list.
I’m going to keep brainstorming about some other possibilities. Definitely waste some free time on Pinterest and browsing some old magazines. To be honest, the simplicity of the ices is just genius but we’ll see. Maybe Sunday will be rainy and I’ll be stuck inside and “forced” to bake. If that happens, let’s just hope I don’t eat everything.
So what about you… Do you have any plans for the upcoming holiday? Maybe going to a big ol’ barbecue or maybe just staying home and relaxing (I wouldn’t blame you, it’s been a long week)? Is there a staple you always make for the festivities or are you going to try something new? Anyone else considering taking the easy way out like me??

That flag cake is awesome! Although I thought the one who came up with that idea was Elissa from 17 and Baking.
Anyways, if you have the time, I’d definitely go with that. Otherwise, the fruit flag gets my vote :)
Elissa may have been the one who came up with the flag cake, I just sited Glorious Treats because that’s where I first found it. I’ll update the post to include Elissa’s blog!
I’d vote for the Fruit flag or the strawberries. You could also do fruit and yogurt parfaits, they are red white and blue. : )
Oo – good idea! Thanks :)
These are so cool. I do have dreams of baking grandeur, but I’ve never come close to anything like those!
Love all those ideas. Good luck deciding which one to bring.
No long weekend for us! But the one after has TWO bank holidays thanks to the queen’s jubilee. Hooray!
Ah – I’m jealous!
They all look like great and challenging options. Well, that ice cream looks especially easy… where do you get that anyway? I’ve never heard of Uncle Louie G’s. What does it taste like? Wonder if they carry it down here.
Our long weekend was last weekend so it’s just a standard one for us this weekend. All the treats look great! I think I’d go with the fruit kabobs that look like the flag. It’s simple but has great impact and would be tasty! Maybe pineapple instead of banana though? bananas go brown if they sit out for too long?
Yummy! Everything looks so festive! That would be a tough call….you could always do a cross btwn the cake and the kabobs (like your aunt) and make a cake with white icing and put the fruit on top like a flag?! Can’t wait to see what you decide :)
Doesn’t Memorial Day mean 4 things actually? Like: “Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.” (Wikipedia). Not to rain on your parade or be snarky but I think it’s important to remember and recognize WHY we have a long weekend and that it’s not National BBQ day.
Sorry that my post came off that way! I know that Memorial Day is really about honoring all of the men and women who have served this country and all of those who will (I actually have a few service members in my family). Joe and I attended this week’s Fleet Week festivities and I’m hoping to have that post up in a few days :)
