When we first saw our new place, we could immediately tell that it had just been painted (gotta love that fresh paint smell). Most of the rooms’ colors were colors I could live with but the living room was not. I don’t think it comes across well in the apartment tour, or in this photo below, but it sort of looks like the color of skin.
If I put my hand up to the wall, it completely blends in. That totally skeeves me out.

Clearly, the easiest option is to paint it. Thank goodness for paint.
Last weekend, Joe and I looked though all the paint swatches we (…er, I) had collected over the past two plus years (I’m unable to get rid of any paint swatches), and ultimately decided that none of them were right. Bummer. This required us to make a trip to Home Depot so we could grab a bunch of paint swatches… and moving boxes so it became a more productive trip.
Our game plan was to basically grab every white swatch we could get our hands on. I never thought I would be the person who chooses to paint their walls white, but here I am. The rationale is that we love the dark-stained wood trim around the windows and want that to be a focal point of the room. I’ve seen a lot of rooms with wood trim and beautiful wall colors but I’m not there yet. For now, I think I’m okay with white because there’s plenty of color in the rest of our home decor.
Then again, I’m completely nervous about actually committing to the right shade.
It’s surprising how many variations there are! There are enough options to drive a girl mad. Some are pure white, some have grey undertones, some yellow, some pink, some blue. I feel insane looking at two almost identical colors and trying to pick one. Ultimately, I hope to end up with a hue that won’t seem so stark (which it why we aren’t going for a pure white).
At this point, I’ve narrowed it down to three four possible colors: Picket Fence, Lamb, Tailor’s Chalk, and Popcorn – all by Martha Stewart Living. Wild, I know.

So now, I’m opening the floor to all of you…

Do you have a go-to color for your home? Anyone a fan of staying with white hues? Are you more often drawn to bold or saturated colors? Have you ever surprised yourself and gone in a totally different direction when it comes to paint?

Haha, Don’t you just kind of have to go with Popcorn?
I definitely feel an obligation to that color (and it lets me pretend that Martha knows who I am)!
Agreed, if in doubt, go for the name that resonates, and popcorn would for SURE
I like the Tailor’s Chalk white. I think something with grey undertones might clash with the dark brown wood, even though it would probably look best with your furniture/pillows, etc.
i think the picket fence is too bright. on my screen, the lamb looks a little gray-ish and i think it might clash with the brown trim. the popcorn color is tempting based on name alone but it also looks a little gray-ish. i vote for tailors chalk.
Hi! I love them all and almost picked Picket Fence but went with Lamb. I am always drawn to bright, bold colors but I’m learning that I don’t actually like them on my walls and that white is nice!
I picked Popcorn ;)
It’s hard to tell without looking at the swatch in the room next to the trim though. Oh and I should tell you, you guys should be veeeerrry thankful for free swatches. Over here? No swatches. You have to pick a color at the store, or buy a paint deck.
I voted for tailors chalk.. but it’s tough with out seeing them next to the trim.
We have flesh colored walls in our place but sadly we aren’t allowed to paint :(
I almost voted for Popcorn just because the name was too perfect not to. But I went with Lamb- I like the grey undertones and think that it would actually look nice with the dark trim (I guess I differ from previous commenters- haha).
I think the popcorn name is biasing your poll results! I like all the choices.. if it were me, I’d probably go with Tailor’s chalk. Good luck!
I think picking out white paint was one of the most frustrating colors I’ve had to pick thus far. Good luck! But I’m a fan of pure white without undertones.
Tough call! We only have white on our woodwork and it is pure white with no undertones like Ashley mentioned. But for walls I’d definitely do something like Popcorn ;)
