Good news, everyone: we have completely moved out of our old apartment!
Joe and I spent our three-day-weekend moving. While it was tiring, the entire process went far smoother than I could’ve imagined, especially considering that it started snowing before the movers arrived at our apartment. It probably doesn’t hurt that we’ve done this three times, not to mention every time we moved into a new dorm or apartment during college, but either way – it was an easy process for us.
On Saturday morning, Joe and I woke up bright and early to finish packing a few boxes and load up our car. At exactly 9:00AM, the movers were at our apartment and quick to start wrapping all of our furniture. At 9:30AM, our friend, Mike, showed up and we loaded up his car. By 10:30, we were at the new apartment with the movers bringing in all of the furniture. Heck – the cable guy was even at our apartment at 11:00 to set us up (our appointment was sometime between 2-4:00 PM. Throughout the course of the day, the three of us made three trips to and from the old apartment.

By 6:00PM, we had managed to bring over everything except our bicycles and two donation bags (which we picked up on Monday morning).
Sunday morning was spent cleaning the old apartment. You know – the usual vacuuming, mopping, and scrubbing down everything. This part of the weekend was exhausting because it was a big apartment. It only reminded me how much nicer it is to live in a smaller space. It was nice to return to our new place and work on finding a place for everything.

On Monday, we headed back to apartment #2 for the last time to meet with our landlord and hand over the keys. Sure, we had 10 days left on our ‘lease’ (aka we had paid rent for the entire month) but we were more than ready to move on. The entire meeting was maybe ten minutes – our landlord did a walk through (we left those boxes for the daughter of my mother in-law’s friend who was seeing the apartment later in the day) and then gave us our deposit back.
It felt good to drive away for the last time.
WIth that said, I thought it would be nice to share some tips to make for a smooth move:

So, do you have any tips for moving? Have you moved around a lot? Anyone else still keeping stuff at their parents’ house (I’m guilty of that)?

Great tips! I especially like the make the beds first plan. That’s so true. Even when we’re not moving, if we’re washing sheets and the comforter, it always seems like we’re putting the clean ones on at like 11:30 at night. So aggravating! Why didn’t we put these on sooner!
Thanks! We typically put sheets on right before bed, too, but every time we move I make sure that the bed gets made happens early in the set-up process. It has been a life saver for every move!
I hate moving. But it sounds like you guys have it down to a science. And good call on bribing friends, we usually do that too ;)
So glad your move went smoothly! Great tips!
When Kev and I moved from the apartment into the Little House, we had more than a month left on our lease. We moved all our furniture on one Saturday afternoon with a U-Haul and a couple friends (whose labor we bought with a couple six-packs). For the rest of our stuff we moved it a tub at a time to the LH every day after work, then put that tub away. It probably wasn’t the most efficient move, but it worked great for us.
Making the bed first is genius, I tell you. It never would have occurred to me.
I’ve never had to really move (I moved from my parents’ place to our apartment) but just the thought it if makes me stressed, hah.
Right now I’m not sure how we’re going to “move” to Boston for 5-ish months. What are we supposed to do with all of our stuff here?!!?
Which is stupid, really, because when I was younger I went with my family for several months to the U.S. a few times, so I should have some experience already…
Oh P.S. I don’t know if this is just me but I’m having trouble receiving new posts in my feed (google reader). They seem to all pop up during the weekend. I usually click from Twitter now when I see there’s a new post up.
That’s so weird! I haven’t noticed that problem myself but I’ll keep an eye out for it. Thanks for looking out!
The same is true for me! It might just be google learning when you post on your new server or something.
Getting the mail forwarded early is a great tip! I had never thought of that. Glad to hear the whole process went smoothly for you guys.
Great tips! I wish I had followed #7 when we moved. We moved into our house 2 years ago and we still have boxes of stuff that obviously we didn’t need to lug over to our new home.
Glad to hear the move went smoothly!
My moving tip is to have toliet paper in your handbag or similar, so you’re not caught out unexpectedly at the new or old house! Some people even have a ‘move’ bag or box with things like that, and scissors and sharpies etc
I like the idea of having a moving bag – we could’ve used one of those (we were constantly asking each other where the scissors were)!
These are so helpful! We move in April, so this is perfect timing for us to keep in mind!!
Yayyyy for new beginnings! :)
Glad your move went well! And those are great moving tips! :)
